This course takes students from understanding their camera to creating portfolio-ready images.

Learn the technical aspects of exposure, the art of composition, the science of lighting, and the business of photography. The curriculum culminates in a final shoot where students produce a body of work for their portfolio.

8 weeks of intensive hands-on learning

Module 1: The Foundation

Theory
  • Introduction to the Exposure Triangle (Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO)
  • Understanding camera modes (Manual, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority)
  • Demystifying the histogram
Practical
  • Hands-on session holding the camera correctly
  • Shooting in Manual mode to achieve correct exposure
Assignment

Shoot 50 frames in manual mode, varying the light sources

Theory
  • Rules of composition (Rule of Thirds, Leading Lines, Framing, Negative Space)
  • How to "see" like a photographer
Practical
  • Walk around the Saag Infinite Creatives studio and neighborhood
  • Find compelling compositions in everyday scenes

Capture 10 images demonstrating different composition rules

Module 2: The Art of Light

Theory
  • Understanding the quality of light (hard vs. soft light)
  • Direction of light (Front, Side, Backlight)
  • Shooting during Golden Hour and Blue Hour
Practical
  • On-location shoot during sunset
  • Capture portraits and landscapes using only natural light

A series of 5 images using backlighting to create mood

  • Guide to on-camera flash vs. off-camera flash
  • Introduction to studio strobes and continuous lights
  • One-light setups

  • In-studio session at Saag
  • Shooting portraits with a single light source and reflector

Classic portrait using a one-light setup

Module 3: Specialization & Genre

Theory
  • Posing techniques and directing models
  • Capturing expressions and emotions
  • Skin retouching ethics and techniques

  • Live shoot with a professional model
  • Peer-to-peer shooting sessions

Create a mini-series of 3 different looks of the same model

  • Shooting for e-commerce and brands
  • Focus on sharpness, clarity, and lighting
  • Handling reflections (glass/metal)

  • Set up a product tabletop shoot
  • Shoot against white and lifestyle backgrounds

Shoot one product for an imaginary brand campaign

Module 4: The Digital Workflow

  • Importing, cataloging, and keywording
  • Non-destructive editing in Lightroom
  • Color correction and skin retouching in Photoshop
  • Compositing basics

  • Editing images from Weeks 5 & 6 in class
